Some of the island women still wear the traditional outfit of headscarf, long full skirt with a white apron, and the many fishermen of the island can be seen in their brightly painted caiques, using the same methods as their forefathers before them. The main town, Patitiri, is an essentially sleepy harbour side settlement, with cafes and tavernas overlooking the comings and goings of the ferries, and fishing boats. The seas around Alonissos are especially clean as they have been set aside as a National Marine Park: a measure which was brought about to protect endangered species including the Mediterranean Monk seal, which can be sighted on the small deserted islands to the North of the island.  The best way to reach the many small beaches and coves is either by walking, or by small boat, either a private one, or caique from the main port, as there is only one asphalt road, and these slower modes of transport give the visitor more time to enjoy Alonissos΄ quiet beauty. Perched high above Patitiri is the old "chora" of Alonissos, a pretty, traditional hilltop village, which following its partial destruction in an earthquake in the 60΄s, has been slowly and faithfully renovated. There are several tavernas and cafe-bars found here, all enjoying the stunning sea views. Bread is baked here by two village women in the old wood fired ovens, and there are a couple of grocers for provisions. Patitiri can be reached by taxi or by bus service. Hydrofoils connect the island with Volos and Agios Konstantinos(2hrs and 30min).These connections link also Alonissos to nearby Skopelos, Skiathos, Skyros, Evia, and to the Peninsula of Halkidiki.
